Store-Bought Toilet Bowl Cleaner Vs. DIY Toilet Cleaning Tablet

Firstly, many commercial cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can harm your health and the environment. In comparison, DIY tablets like Simply Earth’s Easy Toilet Refresher are crafted from natural ingredients, offering a safer, more eco-friendly cleaning solution.

Secondly, store-bought often come with a hefty price tag, especially if you’re aiming for products with environmentally friendly claims. On the other hand, making your cleaning tablets can significantly reduce expenses over time, as they involve common, inexpensive ingredients.

Furthermore, a single batch of Simply Earth’s Easy Toilet Refresher can refresh your toilet, garbage disposal, and other heavy-duty cleaning tasks around the home. This multi-purpose nature makes DIY tablets a more practical choice for savvy, eco-conscious consumers.

What’s in This Toilet Cleaning Tablet Recipe?

Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea Tree Essential Oil is not just any ingredient; it’s a secret weapon in your cleaning arsenal. Known for its potent natural cleansing properties, it is crucial in our Easy Toilet Refresher, offering unmatched support in maintaining a bright and clean home. Its natural, refreshing scent leaves your bathroom smelling invigorating and contributes to a healthier home environment by minimizing harsh chemicals.

Cleaning Bomb
This incredible ingredient elevates the Easy Toilet Refresher to a new level of cleaning prowess. The Cleaning Bomb is designed when you need something more heavy-duty than our Multi-Purpose Cleaning Tablet. Perfect for tough-to-tackle areas, this powerful component works wonders on hard water stains, lingering odors, and stubborn residue.

Directions:

Combine citric acid, baking soda and orange/lemon zest in a large bowl, making sure to mix them well.
Add the lemon or orange essential oil (I used lemon because it’s all I had) to dry ingredients. Stir well to combine, adding more if you’d like a stronger scent.
Add water, but 1/2 teaspoon at a time, mixing with your fingers until it holds together when squeezed but isn’t soaked. You want it to be just damp. Don’t add the water all at once, as this will cause your mixture to fizz right away. You can also use a spray bottle to add the water a little at a time.
Press the mixture into the mold of your choice firmly (I used a cute heart silicone mold I had on hand – but any silicone mold will do). Make sure to press out all the air and compact it together nicely. It might bubble up a bit – if this is the case, consider adding it back to the bowl and putting in more dry ingredients. If it’s too dry, add a bit more water to it.
When everything is nice and compact, place your mold into the freezer and let the citrus toilet fizzies harden (they should be ready in one to two hours, but you can leave them overnight as well). A lot of recipes for toilet fizzies say to allow them to dry overnight before carefully removing them from the mold, but I’m impatient. Placing them in the freezer speeds up the process. Just be sure to store your fizzies in an airtight container.

How To Use a Homemade Toilet Bowl Cleaner?
Using a biodegradable toilet cleaner is a straightforward and eco-friendly way to keep your toilet clean. Here are the steps to effectively use a homemade toilet bowl cleaner:

Ingredients You’ll Need:

Baking soda
White vinegar or lemon juice
Essential oils (optional for fragrance)
A toilet brush
Instructions:

Prepare the Homemade Cleaner:
Mix about 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda with a few drops of essential oils (like tea tree oil or lavender for a pleasant scent) in a bowl. The essential oils are optional but can add a nice fragrance to your cleaner.

Apply the Homemade Cleaner:
Sprinkle the home remedy for cleaning toilet bowl stains. Ensure you cover the entire bowl, focusing on areas with stains and build-up.

Scrub the Bowl:
Use a toilet brush to scrub the inside of the toilet bowl. Make sure to scrub under the rim, around the edges, and the entire surface of the bowl. The baking soda will help break down stains and residue.

Add Vinegar or Lemon Juice:
Pour about 1/2 to 1 cup of white vinegar or lemon juice into the toilet bowl. It will react with the baking soda, creating a foaming and bubbling effect that helps with cleaning.

Let It Sit:
Allow the mixture to sit in the toilet bowl for at least 15-30 minutes. This gives the natural cleaning agents time to work on any stains or build-up.

Scrub Again:
After letting the mixture sit, scrub the toilet bowl once more with the toilet brush. Focus on any remaining stains or areas that need extra attention.

Flush the Toilet:
Once you’re satisfied with the cleanliness of the bowl, flush the toilet. This will rinse away the cleaning mixture, leaving your toilet fresh and clean.

Final Touch:
For an extra shine, you can wipe the outside of the toilet with a damp cloth or disinfectant spray. Don’t forget to clean the flush handle, seat, and lid as well.

Tips:

You can use this homemade cleaner regularly, such as once a week or as needed, to maintain a clean toilet.
If you have especially stubborn stains, you can let the toilet cleaner eco mixture sit in the bowl for a longer period or use a pumice stone to gently scrub away the stains.
Ensure good ventilation when using vinegar in the toilet, as the smell can be strong. You can also add a few more drops of essential oils for a pleasant scent.
